Northern Spain Photo Tour

Join us on an unforgettable photo tour where we immerse ourselves in the unique landscapes of Northern Spain.

Northern Spain Photo Tour

This Northern Spain Photo Tour is for those who want to immerse themselves in some of the most beautiful landscapes of the country. From rugged coastlines to world-class mountains, ancient forests, and unique small scenes, this region is a dream for landscape photographers.

For many, Spain is most known for its wine, tapas, and sandy beaches, but there’s much more to it.

During our Northern Spain photo tour we travel through the three provinces of Viscaya, Cantabria, and Asturias. Each province slightly different from the other but highlights include otherwordly forests, majestic seascapes, and picturesque mountains.

Who is the Northern Spain Photo Tour for?

This trip is designed for lovers of landscape photography that want to enjoy the incredible landscapes in Northern Spain. Whether you’ve just purchased your first camera or have years of experience, we welcome you with open arms. All we ask is that you have a passion for photography and want to share this experience with a small group of like-minded people.

During the week-long Northern Spain Photo Tour, we will introduce you to some of the most incredible places on the region. Alternating between sunrise, daytime and sunset, you get the opportunity to see and photograph these unique places in all types of light and conditions.

While we visit all sorts of landscapes during the trip, we will be spending a lot of time focusing on the stunning coastal scenes of the region. From down low immersed in the action of the waves, to the cliffs above, we find all sorts of opportunities to create amazing photos.

The goal is for you to return home with beautiful images, a greater understanding of landscape and seascape photography, and an unforgettable experience. We aim to enhance your photography skills by providing in-field tutoring and post-processing assistance. Throughout the week, we will cover both theoretical and practical topics, including editing classes where we work on the images captured.

Itinerary

Note: We are working with a semi-fixed itinerary on this Northern Spain photo tour. That means we have set days in certain regions but the exact locations we visit during these days will be determined based on the weather conditions. The key to good photos is to stay flexible and adapt to any situation in order to give you the best possible experience.

DAY 1

The Northern Spain Photo Tour begins upon your arrival at Bilbao Airport no later than 4 PM. We will wait for you outside the airport with our van, ready to drive to our hotel in Bilbao. After checking in and briefly introducing what you can expect throughout the week, we prepare to head out for our first sunset photography session.

DAY 2

We leave the hotel early to photograph sunrise in the beautiful Otzaretta forest located about a 45-minute drive from our hotel. If we’re lucky, we get treated with some fog to really set the atmosphere.

After our morning session we head back to our hotel for a late breakfast/early lunch. We can combine this with a walk through the old town where you get a chance to do some street photography.

In the evening we head out to Gaztelugatxe to photograph sunrise. This tiny chapel scenically located on top of an island is as made for photography and became famous from the Game of Thrones TV series.

DAY 3

For our morning session we go back to the Otzaretta forest for another chance to catch the atmosphere.

Back in Bilbao, we enjoy a late breakfast before we check out from the hotel and begin our drive towards Liencres. We make one or two stops along the way to places such as Cala de Mioño and Castro Urdiales.

After a couple stops, we check in to our hotel in Liencres and have a quick rest before headed out to our sunset location on the amazing Costa Quebrada. More specifically, we’ll shoot the sunset at Los Urros. We will get to know this place a lot better in the coming day.

DAY 4

Day four of the Northern Spain Photo Tour begins with sunrise at the beautiful La Arnia beach and viewpoint. We can photograph from both high and low and take our time exploring its beauty. After sunrise we drive back to the hotel for breakfast.

During the daytime we visit a nearby forest, drive to the nearby village of Santillana del Mar, or enjoy some downtime around the hotel area.

For sunset we will photograph another angle from Costa Quebrada.

DAY 5

We start the day with visiting the forest of Pinares de Liencres located just 10 minutes from the hotel. After exploring the forest, we move down to Playa Valdearenas before heading back to the hotel.

After a late breakfast and little rest, we check out from the hotel and start making our way to our accommodation in Cudillero (2h 10 min drive + stops). On the way, we make a detour and stop by the amazing Picos de Europa to get a break from seascapes and enjoy some mountains.

For our evening session we will photographing the amazing Playa del Silencio beach. Here we can explore both high and low as the beach has a lot of different subjects to photograph.

DAY 6

The day begins with a sunrise session at the unique Gueriua beach. To get there we need to go for a small walk from a nearby village and follow a steep flight of stairs down to the beach. Once there, you’ll find a huge variety of compositional elements for us to work with.

During the daytime we will head into the fishing village of Cudillero where we can enjoy a few scenic viewpoints and lunch in one of the cozy harbor restaurants.

Our evening session will be at the amazing Portizuelo Beach. This is perhaps one of the most impressive sea stacks in Northern Spain.

DAY 7

The final day of our Northern Spain photo tour begins at the beautiful Aguilar Beach located just a few minutes’ drive from our accommodation, leaving us time to enjoy breakfast at the hotel in the early morning.

After a morning session we head back to our hotel and get ready to check out. On our drive back to the hotel we will make some stops and have lunch in a village between Cudillero and the airport.

Possible sunset by the Guggenheim Museum if we want. Otherwise, we’ll end the day with dinner at the hotel.

Day 8

Departure from Bilbao Airport.

Additional Information

While our hotels have breakfast included, we might not always be able to align it with our sunrise sessions. In those cases, I suggest bringing a snack in the morning and we will stop at a café for a late breakfast when we are done shooting.

We will eat lunch and dinners at restaurants near the hotel or in the towns we stay in. On some occasions, you might want to have lunch on your own during our midday break.

The food in Spain is quite good and we have plenty of restaurants to choose between, especially when staying in Bilbao and Liencres. The options are slightly more limited in Cudillero but we have one restaurant in walking distance and a few more within a short drive).
